Haymarket is one of the older areas of Edinburgh city which comes complete with Edwardian design and sandstone buildings. Just off the famous shopping precinct on Princes Square, you might find the ultra-modern contrast of the Voco hotel.

Tall in starter and with a wide glass panelled common area downstairs, the Voco comes with its own gym. Guests can delight in the onsite restaurant and can book rooms both for families and if they have disabled family members. The rooms here inevitably have a view, some of the city and some with the castle on the clifftop as its dramatic backdrop.

The downstairs bar serves cocktails and you can get a full Scottish breakfast in the hotel, complete with haggis. Just don’t think too hard about where it came from. It’s delicious.

Close to the Royal Mile and the multiple options in entertainment it offers, the Voco rates 9/10 for a couple’s stay. Reviewers say they loved the five minute walk to the main streets, the reasonably priced and delicious food, and the friendliness of the staff here.

Nobody can resist the old Scottish charm for long.
